Fabulous story about an weird looking ordinary soldier who made himself invaluable. He's one of my heroes!!.
Without delving into or between facts this book delivers a well written narrative of one of the most hardy of Scott's travelling companions.
Excellent read and review of Birdie Bowers lifetime achievements. He was an incredible optimist which made the book difficult to read because of the eventual ending and his death.
I really appreciated Anne Strathie's book about the life of Henry Robertson Bowers. It was fun and informative to see the Terra Nova expedition from Bower's point of view. The most interesting aspect of the work is the frequent references to Birdie's diary.From it, the reader can learn a thing or two left aside in every other book from Scott's 1911-1912 South Polar expedition. For one thing, Birdie tells us through his writings that there were frequent disagreement regarding steering between Bowers and Scott. Those disagreement led to serious waste of time, confusion and dangerous waste of food and energy. Also, Strathie admit that Teddy Evans in fact had the intention to resign before the final leg of the voyage between Australia and McMurdo Sound. It seems that the rift between Scott's and Evan's wifes were poisoning the men's relations.Other sources would like us to believe that Scott's handling of a P.O. Evans incident, in which Teddy Evans wanted the petty officer out was the cause of the second in command wishing to leave ship.All in all, a very good, quick review of Scott's Terra Nova expedition view from different eyes.

Though Henry "Birdie" Bowers (nicknamed for his prominent nose) was among the handful of men traveled with Scott to the South Pole and shared Scott's fate, Bowers has received far less attention. Birdie Bowers seeks to correct this oversight. Tapping Bowers' unpublished journals and correspondence, Strathie paints a fascinating biography of a man who relished challenge and hardship. Bowers' early years were interesting, but when he reached Antarctica with Scott's expedition it was hard for me to put the book down. If you like tales of adventure and exploration, Birdie Bowers is the book for you.
